The People’s Archive | Community Workshops

The People’s Archive hosts workshops around the UK to engage inner-city communities with photography and everyday snapshots of life. Over the years, we have found that our own photographs of life growing up in the UK resonate with a diverse spectrum of society and are a perfect topic to open up conversations about family, community, and everyday life.

This, in turn, helps to combat social isolation and mental health. Addressing this increases life expectancy, pulling the community together to think about the positive aspects of life in the local area.

It may also lead to other areas of interest. For example, you might see community members take up photography or return to hobbies and interests that they were involved in at the time of the photos. It’s also an opportunity for the community to take responsibility for the photos and the space they’re being exhibited in after the event and keep it going.

Example areas of discussion around the photography.

  • How has society changed?
  • How has this community changed?
  • Has the area changed for the better or worse? WHY?
  • What are the differences between the youth of the past and today?
  • What do you miss? What don’t you miss?
  • What hobbies or interests did you have when you were younger?

The People’s Archive workshops will exhibit a selection of these crowdsourced photographs within the community for a fixed amount of time.

Our workshops will engage people, reignite memories and passions, and highlight how society or a specific community has changed for the better or worse over the years.

“Our towns and cities are shaped by our diverse and multicultural communities. The British Culture Archive and the People’s Archive celebrate our communities and a documentation of everyday life in Britain before the rapid rise of technology, smartphones, and social media”— Paul Wright, founder of the British Culture Archive.
