About the Book
In the winter of 1995–96, long before online ticket sales, securing a place at a major gig often meant queuing through the night outside a venue or box office. Photographer Jon Shard encountered this first-hand on his first assignment for the NME, photographing fans waiting outside Maine Road to buy tickets for Oasis’s forthcoming shows.
The photographs capture the dedication and anticipation of fans prepared to endure freezing conditions for the chance to attend what would become landmark concerts. Oasis went on to play two sold-out shows at Maine Road on 27 and 28 April 1996, performing to 80,000 people at the height of their popularity, with support from Ocean Colour Scene and Manic Street Preachers.
Reflecting on the assignment, Shard recalls the queues themselves as part of the experience — a shared ritual that defined live music culture before the digital age.
