Accessibility Statement — British Culture Archive / The People’s Archive Limited
Effective Date: 7 October 2025
Last Updated: 7 October 2025
British Culture Archive / The People’s Archive Limited (“we”, “us”, “our”) is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of technology or ability. We aim to conform to W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA and to make reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010.
1) Measures we take
We are working to ensure:
Clear, consistent navigation and headings
Sufficient colour contrast and scalable text
Keyboard-only access to all interactive elements
Meaningful link text and form labels
Descriptive alternative text for non-decorative images
Captions or transcripts for video/audio where provided
Reduced motion respected where users set “prefers-reduced-motion”
2) Conformance status
We aim for WCAG 2.2 AA conformance. Parts of the site already meet this standard; some areas are still being improved as we iterate content, images, and templates.
3) Known limitations and planned improvements
We are actively addressing:
Historic images and exhibitions: some older posts may lack full alt text; we are updating these progressively.
Legacy embeds (video/social): older embeds may not be fully keyboard-navigable; we are replacing or adding titles/captions.
Third-party widgets (checkout, mailing): we monitor vendor accessibility and raise issues where needed.
If you encounter an issue not listed here, please tell us (see Feedback below).
4) Compatibility with browsers and assistive tech
The site is designed to work with the latest versions of major browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) and with common assistive technologies (screen readers, screen magnifiers, speech recognition) on current operating systems.
5) Technical specifications
Accessibility relies on:
Standards: HTML5, WAI-ARIA, CSS, JavaScript
CMS: WordPress + Elementor; WooCommerce + CheckoutWC
Practices: semantic markup, ARIA where appropriate, focus management, logical heading order
6) Assessment approach
We use a combination of:
Internal reviews against WCAG 2.2 AA
Keyboard-only testing
Automated checks (linting and contrast tests)
Periodic content audits of galleries, articles, and shop templates
7) Feedback and requests for accessible formats
If you need information on this website in a different format (e.g., large print, audio description, a tagged PDF), or you find a problem not listed here, contact us:
Email: contact@britishculturearchive.co.uk
Please include the page URL, the issue, and your assistive technology or browser if relevant. We aim to respond within 2 working days.
8) Enforcement and further help (UK)
If you are not satisfied with our response, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS) for advice. They can provide guidance on your rights under the Equality Act 2010.
9) Continuous improvement
Accessibility is an ongoing process. We review this statement and our site templates regularly and update this page with progress.
