Soon after leaving college, photographer Jon Shard began photographing Flesh, the influential gay club night held at The Haçienda in Manchester. Working on the dance floor, Shard documented the atmosphere, performance and dress that defined the night, producing a body of work shaped by access and trust to the scene.

For Shard, Flesh offered a rare photographic environment. The openness of the crowd, the carnivalesque fashions and the collective energy of the space informed a series that captures the club night as a site of expression and community.
