British Culture Archive represents a closely selected programme of photographers, photographic estates and archives whose work makes a distinctive contribution to the visual history of modern Britain.
The programme centres on substantial bodies of documentary photography rather than individual images. Each relationship is built around an agreed selection of work that BCA is equipped to research, present and develop over time.
Representation by British Culture Archive is limited and curatorially led.
Representation is offered where the work meets the standard of the existing programme, makes a distinct contribution to it and BCA has the capacity to provide meaningful long-term representation.
Selection reflects both the significance of the photography and archive. Strong work must be supported by appropriate image access, contextual information, provenance and clearly agreed rights.
Photographers and estates retain full copyright in their work.
BCA is appointed to represent specifically agreed bodies of work. Representation is selective rather than career-wide and does not automatically extend to a photographer’s wider archive.

Publishing, exhibitions and editions remain curatorially led and are developed where there is a strong case for the work, the photographer and BCA.

British Culture Archive’s representation programme is primarily developed by invitation.
BCA also holds one annual review period for photographer submissions during August. Opening and closing dates, together with full submission requirements, are announced on the BCA website and mailing list.
Places within the programme are limited, and BCA is unable to take forward every strong or relevant body of work.
Successful proposals are assessed in relation to the quality and significance of the work, its readiness for representation, its place within the existing programme and BCA’s capacity to provide proper long-term management.
