Beezer Photos | The Haçienda, 1986

Photographer Andy ‘Beezer’ Beese visited Manchester in 1986 from his hometown of Bristol and captured images of the club during its pre-Acid House period. The Haçienda was open every night and attracted a diverse group of customers, ranging from punks and Perry Boys to Goths and students.

Unusually, for a club during that time, there was no dress code, it was a haven for the city’s misfits, a cold and cavernous space which often felt empty. In its early years, the Haçienda, a former yacht showroom turned New York style warehouse club, baffled many Mancunians before the arrival of Acid House and ecstasy, which completely transformed the landscape of club culture.
