Jeanie Jean | 21st Century Northern Soul | Open Edition Prints

Jeanie Jean’s work draws on subculture, underground bands and youth culture, which she captures in a raw and honest style.

Jeanie: “Growing up in the ‘90s, I was brought up as a psychedelic mod by my Father, who introduced me to 60’s garage rock music, which eventually led me down the path of punk.

“One evening, nestled in the cosy Rio Cinema at one of Rebel Reel Cine Club’s showings, Elaine Constantine’s Northern Soul burst onto the screen. I became mesmerised and hypnotised by what I saw. When I got home, I immediately prepared my cameras. I researched organisations that are part of the current Northern Soul scene in London and outside the city, and I’ve never looked back.

“I’m known for documenting the current punk and goth scenes, but I’m now heavily involved with Northern Soul. It’s part of my life. I’m a frequent photographer for Deptford Northern Soul Club and Rivoli Northern Soul. Documenting the nights has become truly addictive. It’s beautiful to see people of all ages, from the Wigan Casino era to Gen Z’ers, united and completely absorbed in soul. The energy is electrifying, and of course, the dancing is insane!”
