These photographs were made by Bill Stephenson during Sheffield United’s promotion-winning 1989–90 season, when the club returned to the old First Division under manager Dave Bassett.

Originally commissioned to publicise the BBC Two six-part documentary series United, broadcast in 1990, the work follows the club at a pivotal moment. Supporters, players and management are seen as part of the same wider story: Bramall Lane, away days, match-day ritual and the pull of belonging.

BCA first published this work online in early 2023, bringing the series to a wider audience. Selected photographs from Blades 1989–90 are now represented by BCA as part of our licensing collections.

Stephenson had moved to Sheffield in 1979 to study photography at Psalter Lane Art College, living close to Bramall Lane. From his bedroom window, he could see part of the pitch on match days. The rest came through sound: the crowd, the floodlights, the weather, the rhythm of a club pushing towards something.

The photographs capture Sheffield United at the point where football, place and identity were tightly bound together. This is not just a record of a successful season. It is a picture of a club, a city and a support in full voice.

During the 1989–90 season, Sheffield United’s leading scorers included Brian Deane, Tony Agana and Ian Bryson, with Paul Stancliffe captaining the side. Under Bassett, United secured promotion to First Division football for the 1990–91 season.

Since being published by BCA, the series has received wider attention through features, books and exhibitions, including coverage by BBC South Yorkshire, The Pinch Sheffield United fanzine, Lower Block’s Blades 1989–90 publication, and inclusion in football culture exhibitions in the UK and Europe.
