Youth of the UK

Photographs by Toby Binder

Toby Binder was born in 1977 in Esslingen, Germany, and studied at the Stuttgart Academy of Art and Design. Working between Germany and Argentina, he has built a strong documentary practice around long-form projects that deal with working-class life, social fracture and the pressures shaping everyday experience.

The photographs shown here come from his ongoing series Wee Muckers – Youth of Belfast and Youth of the UK. In both, Binder focuses on young people growing up in communities marked by political tension, economic hardship and strong local identity. He is interested in what gets passed down through place: codes of behaviour, ways of carrying yourself, forms of loyalty, and the limits that can begin to shape a life before it has properly opened out.

There is no romanticising in this work, but nor is there distance. Binder photographs youth culture as something lived from the inside, with all its bravado, restlessness, humour and fragility. His pictures move through estates, streets and social spaces with real attention to atmosphere and human presence, showing how friendship, territory and belonging can become a world of their own.

What stays with you is the balance in the work. Binder is alert to conflict, division and lack of opportunity, but he never flattens people into symbols of those things. The photographs keep their dignity. They leave room for complexity. That is what gives the series its weight.

A collection of Toby Binder edition prints is available exclusively from British Culture Archive.

"The young are the future. But young people suffer higher rates of unemployment, injustice and violence than all other groups in their society. Especially deprived neighbourhoods of former industrial cities within the UK, huge problems with drug abuse, gang fights and teenage pregnancies at a disproportionately high level compared to the rest of Europe."

"The Brexit decision at the 2016 EU referendum will have significant economic, social, political and cultural consequences and none more so than for the futures of these young people. What are their dreams, hopes and fears?"
