Works by British Culture Archive photographers Jon Shard, Mark McNulty, Peter J. Walsh and Tony Davis will feature in Tate Britain’s major exhibition The 90s: Art and Fashion, opening in autumn 2026. The exhibition will also include photography by Mischa Haller, whose work Tate first viewed through British Culture Archive during his time with BCA.
Guest-curated by Edward Enninful, the exhibition brings together art, photography and fashion to reconsider a decade that reshaped British visual culture. Nearly 70 artists, photographers and designers are expected to feature, with the exhibition spanning club culture, fashion, identity, class and the changing representation of Britain during the 1990s.
British Culture Archive has supported Tate’s research and access to selected photographic material connected to the exhibition, while also overseeing permissions and the production of exhibition prints for the works by Shard, McNulty, Walsh and Davis. The selected photographs include work made at The Haçienda and Cream, alongside photographs documenting Britain’s rave and club cultures and the audiences and communities that formed around them.

Jon Shard’s photographs document Flesh, the influential LGBTQ+ club night held at The Haçienda between 1991 and 1996. Made while Shard was closely involved with Manchester’s club culture, the work records the people, fashion and social freedom associated with one of the venue’s defining nights.
Mark McNulty photographed Liverpool’s music and club land throughout the 1990s, including Cream, Quadrant Park and Garlands. His archive documents the development of club culture in the city and the audiences, DJs and venues that shaped it.
Peter J. Walsh began photographing Manchester’s music and nightlife during the 1980s and continued through the emergence of acid house and Madchester. His work includes photographs made at The Haçienda, documenting both the club and the people who gathered there.
Tony Davis photographed Britain’s rave culture during the early 1990s, including events at Nottingham’s Marcus Garvey Centre, The Eclipse in Coventry and gatherings connected to Shelley’s Laserdome. His photographs record the clubs, motorway services and temporary communities surrounding the rave scene.
The photographs selected from the British Culture Archive represent different parts of Britain’s club culture during the 1990s: Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham, Coventry and the journeys made between clubs, raves and after-hours gatherings.
The works extend the history of the decade beyond its most familiar cultural figures. They record the people who attended these clubs and spaces, the fashion, the venues they inhabited and the communities that developed through music and club culture.
