Mark McNulty is a Liverpool-born portrait and documentary photographer whose work has chronicled the city’s music, nightlife and popular culture since the mid-1980s. His photographs are closely tied to Merseyside, recording not only its bands and club nights but also the faces, style and social energy that shaped the scene.
Beyond Liverpool, McNulty also photographed the wider landscape of British house and rave culture, from Quadrant Park, 051 Club and The State to Cream, Bugged Out at Sankeys Soap, Back to Basics in Leeds and Rezerection in Edinburgh. His work stands as a valuable record of the people and places that defined British club culture as it developed from local underground scenes into a national movement.
"My first published work was for a Manchester magazine called Avant. This was the first time I photographed Quadrant Park which was based in a massive old warehouse in Bootle. It was a mad place really with people travelling from all over - It was just one big dance floor!.”
