Beezer

Documentary Photography • Bristol • Manchester • 1980s • Represented by British Culture Archive

Andrew ‘Beezer’ Beese is a British documentary and music photographer. Born in Bristol in 1965, he began taking photographs during the early 1980s, documenting the city’s sound systems, clubs, graffiti, political demonstrations and youth culture.

Beezer was close to members of the Wild Bunch sound system, including Robert ‘3D’ Del Naja, before Massive Attack was formed. His photographs cover the Wild Bunch, the Dug Out, St Paul’s Carnival and Bristol’s developing hip-hop scene. After studying photography at Bristol Technical College, he worked for Venue and the NME. In 1986, he also photographed Hulme and The Haçienda in Manchester. He later worked in London and spent a substantial part of his career in Tokyo.

His early Bristol archive was published in Wild Dayz, first issued in Japan in 2004 and published in the UK in 2009. Further work appeared in the two-book Until Now: Volume I — A Life in Photos 1982–1986 in 2025. Beezer’s photography has been exhibited at Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Urbis in Manchester, Diesel Art Gallery in Tokyo and Saatchi Gallery in London.

British Culture Archive first published Beezer’s photographs of The Haçienda on 15th March 2022. BCA represents selected work from his archive across editorial, print editions, exhibitions and image licensing.
