Bill Stephenson is a British social documentary photographer whose work examines everyday life, community and public identity in late twentieth-century Britain.
Born in Birmingham in 1955, Stephenson spent his teenage years in Leeds before studying briefly at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham. He came to photography while enrolled on a furniture design course, using the camera first as a practical tool before recognising it as the medium he wanted to work with. In 1977, he spent a season as a photographer at Butlin’s in Skegness, an experience that helped him overcome his shyness and gave him the confidence to photograph people directly in busy public spaces.
Stephenson moved to Sheffield in 1979 to study photography. His work developed through close attention to people, place and the social conditions around them. He has described his interest as photographing communities that are often overlooked, neglected, marginalised or considered unimportant, with the aim of making historically specific documents of lives and places that might otherwise disappear from view.
British Culture Archive represents selected works by Bill Stephenson, including photographs from Streets in the Sky, his 1988 study of the last residents of Hyde Park Flats in Sheffield, and his photographs of Sheffield United during the club’s 1989-90 promotion season.
