Photographs from Chris Hunt’s Beeton Grove series were used as projected stage backdrops during Johnny Marr’s live tour in December 2023.

The images appeared during performances of Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me, accompanying an orchestral arrangement of the song with photographs documenting everyday life and close-knit working-class communities in 1970s Longsight, Manchester.

Hunt’s photographs from his Beeton Grove series form part of a wider body of work documenting Manchester during a period of major social and cultural change. The series focuses on the streets, families and communities surrounding Beeton Grove in Longsight.

The use of the photographs during Marr’s performances created a direct visual connection between the environments that shaped parts of Manchester’s musical culture and the lived realities of the city during the 1970s.

Writing about the performances, The Guardian noted the inclusion of Hunt’s photographs during the song, recognising the connection between the imagery and the wider social landscape from which the music emerged.
