Chris Hunt

Chris Hunt is a British documentary photographer whose early work focuses on working-class life in Manchester and Wolverhampton during the mid-1970s.

In 1974, after living on Beeton Grove in Longsight for a year, Hunt began photographing his neighbours. He worked house by house, combining photographs with recorded conversations about family, work, housing and migration. He returned to several households with prints from earlier visits, allowing the project to develop over time. The photographs and transcribed conversations were published together in Beeton Grove in 2016.

The following year, Hunt photographed Wolverhampton for Out of Darkness. Working around the Open Market, the Mander Centre, Bilston and Whitmore Reans, he documented people in the city’s streets, markets and public spaces.

The two bodies of work take different approaches. Beeton Grove is a sustained study of one street and the people who lived there; Out of Darkness presents a wider view of everyday life across Wolverhampton.
