A collection of images from the series ‘Out of the Darkness’ by Chris Hunt, taken during the mid-1970s in Wolverhampton.
Prior to Hunt’s documentation and important social record, Beeton Grove, which focused on 1970s Manchester, this series portrays ordinary life in Wolverhampton during the mid-1970s and the growing racial tensions that plagued the city during the same time.
Chris: “Before I embarked on a career in advertising photography, I continued taking documentary photos, which is my true passion. This series was about the changing face of Wolverhampton in the 1970s. It documents the city, around the Open Market and the relatively new Mander Centre (completed 1968). There are some vaguely humorous shots, while also shedding light on the simmering racial tensions of the era..
