Not Going Home brings together Mischa Haller’s photographs of clubbers and partygoers in the early hours following nights out across the UK during the summer of 1998.
Photographed in the period between clubs closing and people finally heading home, the series captures those suspended hours when the main event has ended but the night continues. Haller turned his camera towards people waiting, talking, travelling and carrying on as daylight returned, recording the slightly woozy and surreal atmosphere of the journey home.
In her foreword, journalist Kate Spicer writes: The Party’s over. The club lights on. You heard about an afters. The sun’s just coming up and the light is a distraction. The main event is over, what next? Because you’re….NOT GOING HOME
Together, the photographs form a distinctive record of British nightlife, youth culture and the social world surrounding clubbing at the end of the 1990s.
Published by British Culture Archive in 2025, Not Going Home was the first photobook released through BCA’s publishing programme. Produced in two editions totalling 2,500 copies, both editions are now sold out.
During Haller’s representation, Tate Britain approached British Culture Archive to view the series during the development of The 90s: Art and Fashion. Photography from the work was subsequently selected for the exhibition. The collaboration between Mischa Haller and British Culture Archive concluded in November 2025, and Haller now works independently.
