British Culture Archive licensed a Jon Shard photograph from Flesh at The Haçienda for the paperback cover of Queer beyond London: LGBTQ Stories from Four English Cities, published by Manchester University Press.
Written by historians Matt Cook and Alison Oram, Queer beyond London looks beyond London-centred accounts of queer British history, exploring LGBTQ+ life in Manchester, Leeds, Plymouth and Brighton from the 1960s to the noughties.
The book includes Manchester’s dance and drag scenes, making Shard’s photograph from Flesh a fitting cover image for the paperback edition.
Flesh was one of the defining queer club nights at The Haçienda during the 1990s. Jon Shard’s photographs from the night document an important part of Manchester’s club culture and LGBTQ+ history, capturing the energy and atmosphere of a scene that remains culturally significant.
Licensing to independent and major publishers forms part of British Culture Archive’s ongoing work representing selected documentary photography.
