Roger Shelley | Manchester and Salford, 1960s
Roger Shelley photographed the streets of Manchester and Salford from the 1960s onwards, capturing the communities living on the terraced streets on the outskirts of Manchester city centre.
A large section of Roger’s images document the slum clearances in Hulme and Chorlton-on-Medlock, and the subsequent regeneration and new estates that re-housed displaced communities across the region.
“Manchester was rapidly changing in the 1960s, swathes of the old terrace two-up-two-down houses were demolished to make way for modern high-rise flats and maisonettes. A lot of communities were moved out of the city to estates that were already built, whilst others stayed in temporary accommodation and waited to be re-housed within their old communities.”
