Peter J Walsh found himself at the epicenter of Manchester’s groundbreaking acid house, club, and rave scenes. Immersing himself in this cultural revolution, he captured the faces and fashions that graced The Haçienda dancefloor, as the city became a cultural mecca and global export of music and fashion.
In addition to their cultural significance, Walsh’s photographs are also of historical importance. They document the emergence of a genre of music and a club culture that would go on to shape the UK and world music scene for decades to come. They also capture a moment of cultural change in the UK, as young people embraced a new style of music and fashion that represented a break from the more traditional styles that had dominated British culture for decades.

“The rave generation, Madchester, whatever you want to call it, was a revolutionary time in musical and British cultural history. On the back of a grim, economically challenging decade under Thatcher, and the last era before smart phones and the internet age, it united a generation. Ecstasy and music brought young people together, from single mums and students, to council workers and football hooligans. Lifelong friendships were forged and ideas were created that continue to shape the cultural landscape to this day.”
