Luis Bustamante is a Chilean-born British documentary photographer. He arrived in Hull as a political refugee in December 1974, following the military coup in Chile. While completing an MPhil at the University of Hull, he began photographing his new surroundings.
His photographs of Hull and Manchester record everyday life in northern cities during the 1970s. The wider British archive includes industrial communities, Chilean exile groups, trade-union activity and political demonstrations. In 1985, Bustamante became the first education worker at the Photo Co-op, which later developed into Photofusion.
His work has been exhibited through BCA at the Science and Industry Museum and Bury Art Museum. Material from his Photo Co-op years is held within the Photo Co-op Archive at the Martin Parr Foundation.
BCA works directly with Bustamante to release selected photographs from his British archive as exclusive, hand-numbered limited editions, each supplied with a certificate of authenticity.
