About the Photographer | Alex Hurst

Alex Hurst is a documentary and portrait photographer from Liverpool and has been active since the mid 1990s. Alex’s photographs illuminate the profundity in the mundane and the magic in the everyday.

Alex “I have always been a very people orientated person and I became interested in photography from a young age, so social documentary was a way of combining both of those interests. I’d spend my days as a teenager wandering around the city and its surrounding area looking for people to photograph. My black and white shots were taken using very hi-speed course grain film – I was obsessed with grain back then.”

“In retrospect, I must have looked mad as from 1996 I was walking around taking pictures while pushing my daughter around in her buggy! When I look back at the photographs I took during this period, I feel that they have become more meaningful with the passage of time. Many areas of nineties Liverpool are no longer recognisable; capturing these fleeting moments provides us with a time capsule that keeps us in touch with times and places that are long gone.”
