Anne Worthington Photograph Featured on the Cover of David Scott’s Mancunians

Anne Worthington’s photograph Walkway Kids, Grey Mare Lane, Beswick, 2001, sourced through British Culture Archive, was selected for the front cover of David Scott’s Mancunians, published by Manchester University Press.

The book looks at Manchester at the turn of the millennium, moving beyond familiar stereotypes to focus on the people, voices and cultural shifts that shaped the city during a period of major change.

Worthington’s photograph was made in Beswick, East Manchester, in 2001, as part of her wider work documenting communities across Beswick, Clayton and Openshaw before and during regeneration.

The image shows children on a walkway at Grey Mare Lane, close to a moment when everyday life, post-industrial change and major redevelopment were visibly meeting. Its use on the cover of Mancunians reflects the continuing relevance of Worthington’s East Manchester photographs, and their value as a record of the city during a defining period.
