Between 1975 and 1977, David Chadwick photographed Hulme, Manchester, documenting residents, housing and everyday life during the early years of the newly built estate. The series includes portraits, children, communal walkways and wider views of the Hulme Crescents.

Chadwick moved to Manchester in 1972 to study photography at Manchester Polytechnic’s School of Art. He began photographing Hulme during his final year and continued the series over the following two years.

The Hulme redevelopment had replaced a large area of Victorian terraced housing with crescent-shaped blocks, maisonettes and deck-access walkways. Chadwick’s photographs document some of the estate’s first residents.
