Hulme Portraits

Manchester, 1975–1977

Between 1975 and 1977, David Chadwick photographed residents of Hulme during the early years of the newly built Crescents and surrounding estate. Made across Hulme, the portraits include individuals, couples, families and groups of residents.

Chadwick began the Hulme series during his final year studying photography at Manchester Polytechnic’s School of Art. Returning regularly over the following two years, he developed a sustained body of work concerned with the residents as well as the architecture of the estate.

These portraits form part of Chadwick’s wider Hulme archive, documenting some of the first people to live in the development. This gallery sits alongside Chadwick’s general Hulme gallery and Hulme children.
