Joy Rave, 1989 | Peter J Walsh

Joy, a mass outdoor rave at Stand Lees Farm, Ashworth Valley, Rochdale, took place over the weekend of August 5th-6th, 1989. The rave was organised by brothers Anthony and Christopher Donnelley, founders of the Gio-Goi fashion label. It was the biggest rave the North had seen and was attended by tens of thousands of people. The rave was dubbed ‘A Woodstock for the rave generation’ and lasted for 24 hours, adding weight to the tagline “24-hour party people” made infamous by Happy Mondays.

Photographer Peter J Walsh was present to document this historic outdoor event, which was one of the first outdoor raves in the UK. You can read our full feature with Peter J Walsh via the link at the bottom of the gallery.
